Abattoir & Deboning Set Up

West South Atlantic will help you design and execute your Abattoir and deboning facility to cater to your immediate needs and future needs. Based on current developments in Nigeria, setting up an abattoir (slaughterhouse) and a deboning facility can be a capital-intensive but highly strategic venture. The sector is moving away from traditional, unhygienic practices toward integrated, modern facilities that combine slaughtering, processing, cold storage, and waste management. That is why engaging the services of West South Atlantic is the first step in the right direction for your venture.

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD) convened a national validation workshop in December 2025 to finalize a new framework for abattoir operations . The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and NAFDAC also enforce codes of hygiene and good manufacturing practices

Core Infrastructure (Based on Modern Models)

A modern integrated abattoir must be designed for hygiene and efficiency, as demonstrated by the ECOWAS-commissioned facility in Abuja. The facility at Kara Market in Ogun State serves as another case study for improving conditions through architectural design.

Component/Area Purpose & Specifications

Lairage (Stabulation): Holding pens where animals rest before slaughter; certified by the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure they are healthy upon arrival.

Killing Box: A restrained area for humane stunning and slaughter, designed to minimize suffering.

Processing Units: Dedicated areas for evisceration, meat cutting, and deboning. The slab must be an impervious material with proper drainage. Adequate space must be provided for hygienic meat processing activities.

Cold Storage: A 25-ton cold room and refrigerated vans to preserve meat at consistent temperatures (0-4°C) throughout the supply chain.

Water Treatment: On-site borehole and treatment plant ensuring 24/7 potable water for washing carcasses and equipment. Must be connected to a public water supply where available.

Waste Management: Biodigesters convert waste (blood, manure) into biogas and liquid fertilizer, turning waste into wealth and energy.

Veterinary & Training: On-site veterinary office for inspections and a training centre to build the capacity of butchers and operators.

Operational Management & Standards

Regulatory Compliance & Licensing
Your facility must be approved by multiple regulatory bodies in Nigeria:

  • Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC): Register your business (e.g., Ltd, Business Name)
  • Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON): Ensure construction, equipment, and operations meet documented standards for abattoirs and meat products.
  • NAFDAC: Obtain approval for meat processing and adherence to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) for Food Regulations, 2025.
  • State Veterinary Services: For animal health inspections and meat certification.
  • Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC): If you plan to export meat products.
  • Plan for Export from the Start: Even if you start with the local market, design your facility to meet international standards (ISO 22000, HACCP, NAFDAC GMP) to access lucrative export markets later.
  • Do Not Skip the Cold Chain: Without a robust cold chain (cold room + refrigerated vans), you will face spoilage losses exceeding 30%.

With West South Atlantic, we will ensure you meet all the standards and rules on time to roll out your faccility.
